The Russian Ministry of Health has registered colistimethate sodium from the Rus Biopharm group of companies in new dosages of 3,000,000 U and 4,500,000 U. This antibiotic, essential for Russian patients with cystic fibrosis, is now available in four dosages: 1,000,000 U, 2,000,000 U, 3,000,000 U, and 4,500,000 U.
There are over 4,500 patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in Russia, more than half of whom are children. Colistimethate sodium can be used to treat certain bacterial infections when other antibiotics are inappropriate, including some lung infections in adults and children with cystic fibrosis. Depending on the patient's age, sodium colistimethate, in the form of a lyophilisate for solution preparation, is administered intravenously or by inhalation using a nebulizer (in this case, it is suitable for children aged 0 years and older). It has a detrimental effect on certain bacteria that cause dangerous infections, disrupting their cell walls and causing their death.
"We registered high-dose colistimethate sodium for the convenience of medical personnel in Russian healthcare institutions, whose patients may require daily intravenous administration of up to 12,000,000 U of the drug. This increases the possibility of flexible dosing for different categories of patients with cystic fibrosis, especially during exacerbations," says Evgenia Shapiro, General director of PSK Pharma.
